And with the beautiful weather we are having in NorCal, it's really hard to stay inside. We've taken walks and rides to the park but it was just not enough. So, one of the mornings this past week, we had to ake a little errand to the post office. And the sun, along with the cool weather, just beckoned us to stay a little longer. Yep, it beckoned us, okay? And I mused aloud, "Boy, I just feel like taking a drive.." and no more than a second passed before Grace piped up with a, "Me, too!" I've got to admit, it didn't take much to convince me. So, we went back home and got all the essentials and headed out for our ride. And a ride it was! We started on the back roads of our town and gradually made our way past the popular lakes in the area. Eventually we ended up in Calistoga where we stopped to have lunch and a look around. Calistoga is one of those towns that make you forget about the recession, the state giving you an IOU, and the stimulus package. At least for an hour. It is the essence of relaxation; massages, spas, mud baths, stress relievers. Now, that was not on the agenda on this little escapade but it certainly started the wheels in my head for the next trip! After stopping by the candy store, the pizza place and the orginal train station, we made our way back towards home, but not without stopping at a fun park in Napa.

The great thing is that you can do a lot of learning just by taking these jaunts and apply the things that you have learned already. Here's some of the things we did while we were out!

We found lots of shells where the water had receeded. Of course, my senses aren't anywhere near that of a deer but hopefully I looked tougher than the average doe.

Dayna and her favorite thing in life -- Candy!

A funny little mannequin that we came across

At the train depot

"Aw! I guess we just haven't done anything postable lately. We are currently going through Exodus in the bible and studying history in 1400-1800's. We just finished Columbus and will now transition to California Native Americans. We read a great book called, The Tainos, the First People to Greet Columbus. Very interesting. Sad in many ways. Even though I know that we didn't have anything to do with how this country was founded, I can't help but feel pangs of guilt for those who were pushed off and out of their land. Grace was able to make the connection of what it would be like if that happened to us. When I read the book and about how the Tainos were required to prepare a tribute (gold dust or other valuables) or the Spainiards would enslave them, I thought of A Bug's Life. That is what the grasshopppers did to the poor ants, requiring them to prepare a food tribute for them... or else! Unfortunately, the Tainos didn't fair as well as the Ants. Today not one traceable person can be called a true Taino. Anyway, it was very interesting as this is the most investigating I have done on Columbus since we started homeschooling. But that's okay because I think at this age they are able to understand more than they would've years before. This is definitely not the story I heard about Columbus when I was in school!

I'm looking forward to learning about the Californian Native Americans. We have local information here and we will also look at the development of the missions. That's interesting timing because my nephew, who is also in 4th grade, started studying missions this year, too, at his school. It'll be fun to compare notes! We are close to several missions and have visited one in Sonoma, but there are others that would be fun to visit. The one in Santa Barbara actually has an adobe called the Covarrubias adobe! I have a picture with David standing under it somewhere. Here is one from the Sonoma mission that we visited last year.

There was a lot going on there that day because a school was visiting. They invited the girls to weave a basket, but they were also cooking, making candles and bead jewelry. I would like to plan this for our homeschool group in the future.

Well, that's all I have time for today! Hope you enjoy the update!

That Time of Year Again

3 words: I love fall!

Yes, this is my favorite time of the year. The colors, the weather, the anticipation of holidays, and even football. But most of all, I love going to the pumpkin patch. This year we were having a hard time trying to fit it in but in the end, we were able to go with some from our homeschool group. The patch is called, "Impossible Acres" and to tell you the truth, I never did find out why. But I do know that the woman who runs it is a Christian and has written a book about ministering for Gospel for Asia. The name of her book is Even Donkeys Speak. It's written for chidren 7-12, which is right up our alley. It will be our bedtime book, now that we have finished Mary Poppins. Okay, and speaking of Mary Poppins - That is one wierd book! But, anyway, back to the pumpkin patch. Most pumpkin patches have fun little activities but what about this one:

Yep, and there were actual examples...

There were also hay mazes and tunnels, pumpkin choosing, tractor ride and the like. But Grace and Emily's favorite was the petting animal farm. So here were all these cute animals - bunnies, piglets, goslings, pygmy kids, chicks, a calf and their adult counterparts. But guess what their favorite was? Kittens!

My favorites were the kids. This is the first year that I've attempted to have a little structure with Little Miss but I felt it was necessary to try something new with her. She is very active and loves to color, cut, glue, draw on the white board, play with her toys, play with stickers, etc. BUT each activity will only hold her interest for 10-15 minutes -- which sounds perfectly normal for a 3-year-old. However, since I am responsible for the necessary schooling of Grace and Emily, I find it increasingly difficult to keep her entertained while teaching them. We do not use a "here's your workbook page, fill it out" kind of curriculum. Weaver is an inter-active, parent involved curriculum. In years past, I was able to make sure that Little Miss was down for naps while we schooled. Then, towards the close of our last school year, she was only taking one nap a day. So instead of schooling in the morning, we started schooling in the afternoon when she was down. Well, this didn't make for much of our school day! I decided that I'd better try something new this year and I found a great curriculum called Bright Beginnings, geared towards preschoolers. And while it is a beautiful resource, it is still quite a challenge to juggle it all! *sigh* One thing I am learning to do is to go over certain subjects, such as math or language arts, with Grace and Emily in advance and then let them work on their own for a bit while I do something with Little Miss. Today was a fun day as we are starting with God and Creation. We read about how God created the heavens and the earth; the plants and animals and people. Our activity was to take 1 cup of flour, 2 cups of oats and 1 cup of water. I let Little Miss pour each item in and we began to mush and gush. I let her feel as each item went in and she told me how it felt - soft, gushy! Then we smelled it -- ewww! And she decided to taste it -- double ewww! So I added cinnamon, nutmeg (which is covering "fall" smells from part of her lesson) and for fun, added different types of sprinkles. Of course, she wanted to eat some of the yummy sprinkles! At her suggestion, we added more water and it got even gushier! Although I try to involve her in the hands-on actvities that we do with school, it was fun to have one just for her.

Grass Valley Draft Horse Fair

Last week we took a jaunt up to beautiful Grass Valley, near Auburn, CA. It was such a perfect, (nearly) fall day. My mom has wanted to take my girls up to see this event for a year and we made sure not to miss it. Both girls love horses and these are HORSES! They are so huge. But they are one of God's most awesome creation. Just looking at them, you can see how powerful they are. There were Percherons, Clydesdales, Belgiums, Shires, Suffolks, and American Cream breeds. Unfortunately, because we went the very first day, the fair itself was not completely up and running and the performances weren't scheduled until later that night, which for a number of reasons, we could not stay for. But we enjoyed admiring these beautiful animals and standing in awe of their stature. Next year we are planning to make a full day of it, on a Friday or Saturday, of course!

Scabs!

Gross, huh? Moving onward in our study of the circulatory system, which is so fascinating I might add, we discussed how the body protects itself from infection. Enter - red and white blood cells and platelets! Yahoo! This is a fun little project that we did. First I cut up a bunch of "platelets" and " red and white blood cells". Then I cut a few large holes from a piece of black construction paper and laid tape over the holes. Then I told a story about Billy -- Billy was a daring kind of guy who liked to do exciting stunts on his bike...." You can figure out where blood came in. So Billy has this accident and scrapes up his whole arm (the black construction paper). Who come rushing to the rescue but our heroes, the blood cells and platelets! The girls had to cover the sticky opening entirely to prevent infection. As they did that, I did little cheers for the "players". It was a short but fun exercise. He protects us and spares us from things we don't even know about; He created our body to protect itself in numerous ways; He gives us wisdom to implement family rules to protect us, etc.

Blood cells are two of the ways God has created within us to protect us so we did a fun project to recreate a blood cell. Not only fun but yummy! First we made raspberry/cranberry Jell-O.

Then we placed the Jell-O (the hemoglobin) in sandwich bags (the membrane), along with a grape (I thought this was supposed to be the nucleus -- but guess what? Red blood cells do not have nuclei.) After lunch, we enjoyed eating our yummy project! And added a white blood cell (whipped cream) to join us!

Dayna enjoyed being in on this "smells good" project!

Froggies and Butterflies

We completed our unit study with the observation of real, live tadpolies! Yes! God's timing is so great. At church, one of my fellow homeschoolers was handed a mysterious parcel covered in a plastic bag. So I inquired of its contents and what do you think it was? Okay, okay -- I'm sure you've already guessed -- tadpolies! I was so excited! What a perfect complement to our study! So, without much badgering, I was able to acquire some tadpolies of my own. In fact, I acquired quite a few. More than I needed. And you know what I found out? Tadpolies need lots of care. More than my own dog. The water declorinating and changing, the feeding which included blood worm defrosting (okay??), setting up their home and weeding them out as they developed. Okay, I killed a few. That was the hardest part. I hated flinging them over our back fence. So dishonoring. But, I got over it and pressed on. It was so exciting to see them develop their back legs, then their front legs and watch their tail shorten. Just like the pictures in books! And just like the girls had drawn in their frog cycle. It was so cool to see it in action.

But we found out that as soon as they developed their little front legs, they were eager to escape the confines of their bowl. We learned that they were some type of tree frog. They would stick to the sides of their bowl like glue and we could see how their little feet were not webbed but fingerlike with the little knobbies at the end. And they were SO little! And cute!

However, the time did come when we had to let them go. They were actually escaping from their habitat - one that was specifically made for developing tadpoles and frogs. They were so small that they could escape between the slats in the container that served as air holes. We would find them on the counter all the time. So we took some of them out to one of our local water sources, called the Lagoon and featured earlier on this blog, and we let them go. I was actually a little sad. They looked so little and helpless out there with all the ducks, geese, lizards and other predators around. At that point we still had about 10 left between the ones I had in another habitat and those still developing. At least that's what I thought. I counted them every day and it seemed like there were less of them. A few of those darn little critters had escaped and met their demise on the counter, all dried up. Oh, it was a sad sight! So after about a week or two, we took the rest of them and let them go at one of our parks with a large creek. Still so small. I'd rather not know what ultimately happened to them. And what am I going to do with all those frozen blood worms in my freezer? My son, Tyler, grossed out when he came upon them. You know they are mosquito larvae? Ewww!! Anybody need some?

Right now you may be asking, what do butterflies have to do with this post? Well, in the midst of the tadpole rearing, my mom ordered us some caterpillars. Those were a neat sideshow to the tadpoles. They only took about 2 weeks from the time we got them to the time that they turned into a butterfly. I had never seen the process before and it was pretty interesting. The butterflies were beautiful.

We let them go shortly after they metamorphosed because I couldn't bear to see them flap around the little butterfly habitat. The little balls that they are sitting on are paper towels soaked in sugar water, but how can that compare to their instinctive craving for nectar?

So our school year culminated with "changes", tadpoles to frogs and caterpillars to butterflies. Oh, and let's not forget -- a first grader to a second grader and a third grader to a fourth grader.

I couldn't be more proud!

Frogs!

We are currently on Unit 5, Chapter 6 of our Weaver curriculum. At this point, we are in Exodus where Moses and Aaron go before Pharoah and announces to him that the Lord has said to "Let My people go!" Pharaoh does not comply and as we well know, the Lord begins to pronounce judgments upon the land. First the river Nile is turned to blood and now there are frogs everywhere! Imagine frogs in your cereal bowl! Then Moses cries out to the Lord concerning the frogs and the Lord hears his cries and causes the frogs to die. Ooohh yuck! What a stench that must've been. Even still, Pharaoh's heart is hardened and he does not relent to let the Israelites go because his magicians were able to duplicate what Moses and Aaron have done.

Immediately what comes to mind is this:

God keeps His promises (like He did with Moses and Aaron when He promised to give them the ability to perform these miracles)

God hears our prayers (like when Moses couldn't take the frogs anymore!)

People can try to imitate and copy the true and living God, but as we'll find out, in the end they will prove to be false.

We have been reading about froggies this week and today I gave the girls an art lesson on how to draw a frog. They did pretty good considering that I was the one teaching them! Gracey's is first, Emily's second.

Homeschool Share Back to School Blast 2008

Okay, I don't normally get into the whole "Blog" thing because I use this blog to keep our favorite people up to date with what's going on in school for us. Over at Homeschool Share, they are having a contest for new unit study curriculum. I am interested in submitting a unit study for the First Time Unit Study Writers. We have 2 years under our belt using unit studies and I would love to actually write one! Plus, they have this super-cool shirt to give away if you post their contest on your blog; hence the reason why I'm writing this post!

So if you have a moment, visit one of my new favorite websites, Homeschool Share, and check out all of their great resources!

Benjamin Franklin Lapbook

Our most recent Lapbook
*Note: If the advertisement is up on the screen, just "X" out of it and the slideshow will play

Weaving

In line with our study of Moses and the Nile River, we also did some braiding and weaving. First the girls braided some raffia to make a basket. I don't know where I got the idea that this would make a good basket but with some trial and error, we managed to make a few, with the help of my handy-dandy gluegun! Grace's turned out looking like a straw hat -- perfect for her Build-A-Bear, Lilli! Emily's looked more like a basket and here she is with her Build-A-Bear poodle, Pinki.

The girls also tried their hand at the real act of weaving (once I watched a you tube video on it!). For Bible, we are in Exodus 2, learning about Moses' family. Just when you think you know everything you can possibly know... So, in Social Studies, we have been studying the Nile River. We are trying to compose a lapbook for it, but my creativity is on the low end. We'll see if it gets done now or later! In Science, we have looked at the composition of the earth: land/water, crust, mantle, outer core, inner core. I found a great hands-on project for this:

Greenish-yellow: land mass; Blue: water; purple:crust; lt. orange: mantle; pink:outer core; dark orange: inner core.

The girls created their "earths" and then we cut away a section to see what it looked like inside. It was so interesting! There were so many new things that I learned! I used information from several different resources and developed our study from there.

We went in this order:

The Mayflower

The passengers aboard the Mayflower

The reasons for going to the New World

The Wampanoag people who lived on the land originally

The arrival of the English Colonists and their first year

The Mayflower Compact

The different dialects and languages of the Colonists and the Indians

The harvest festival, now commonly known as Thanksgiving

There is so much information on this topic so we read a lot and tried to apply it as often to things that we already know about. I was concerned that some of it would go right over Grace and Emily's head but they surprised me about how much they understood. In fact, as we covered the Mayflower Compact and the reason for it and this early American type of government, Grace put it all together in her mind and compared it the government of the show we like to watch, Kid Nation. That opened a whole new door to talk about as we covered that subject! My fears were for naught!

One of my favorite books was Sarah Morton's Day, A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim girl. At the suggestion of some of the material I had, we began documenting the things that the girls did each day. We are starting to put it in a little book now.

Lastly, we made the "trip" from England/Holland to the New World on our dining room table using Play-doh to make the ships - Mayflower, Fortune, Anne and Little James. They also had to pack a bag to take with them on the trip. They had a limited space because there was limited room for such things for 102 people on the Mayflower. Here are a few pictures of that little excursion:

Happy Thanksgiving! Right now we are half-way through the unit study of the human body, which has been very interesting. We started with cells, talked about bones and touched on the progression of a child from the moment of conception. Then we moved on into the digestive system, which has brought on some giggles and looks of disgust from the girls! Grace doesn't exactly like talking about how our body gets rid of it's waste! For me, and something I try to impress on the girls, is how marvelous our bodies are and perfectly created by an awesome, genius and imaginative Creator! Psalm 139:13-14 says, "For You formed my inward parts and covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works and that my soul knows very well." Try reading the entire 139th Psalm. It shows you the many attributes of God and I know I stand in awe of Him whenever I read it.
As you can see, we made cut-outs of the girls' bodies and we are adding parts as we study them. Grace loves science because of all the hands-on activity! We still have a lot to cover and may not finish in a month. There is so much information and so much to be amazed by, I don't want to just graze over it, even though every year we'll go a little more in-depth. Also, in an effort to take good care of our bodies, we've added a one and a half mile walk/ride (I walk, the girls ride) into our mornings so that we are getting some exercise.

Our homeschool group started back up last Friday and we are looking forward to many activities. Every year we seem to do it a little different. We studied animals after the plants and then went on to the solar system, which was a month long unit study. It truly is astounding how incredible the universe is! Have you ever really thought about it? I love studying along with the girls because it ignites my own passion to learn! We began by learning about the stars, the sun being the closest one to us. Then we went on to planets, the Milky Way system, the moon and so on. Just the little bit we touched upon left me totally in awe of God's creation. We did something different at the end of this unit, something I've been wanting to do for so long. It's called a lapbook.

I first heard of lap/notebooking a year ago when I decided that the workbook approach to learning was just not up to par. The curriculum that I was using was very "workbook" oriented. Then someone told me about lap/notebooking. After some research, I decided I loved this hands-on approach and knew the kids would, too. Then, in order to keep things structured, we went with a new curriculum that would allow me to incorporate this type of learning. However, as things go, we rarely had time (or so I thought) to actually do it. So, I determined that with this last unit, we were going to take what we learned and apply it to a lapbook and here it is! Grace now wants to end every unit with a lapbook! Emily, I think, has her reservations. It's a little more hands-on work than she would like. Emily learns a lot just from reading and listening. Or being outside! Grace is my crafty one. I knew she would be hooked! By the way, in case you were wondering -- yes, we did include Pluto as a planet. When I told the girls that scientists were now no longer considering Pluto a planet, they rebelled! "That's not fair! Pluto's so cute!!" So, we included Pluto and deal with that when they're older and more mature :)

So, we completed our year and are looking forward to a nice break. We do our official promotion tomorrow. Grace is promoting to 3rd grade and Emily to 1st. I'll post again for the promotion and then we'll send you more updates on the family page of what we do this summer!

Green Thumbs!

Plants were the theme of our latest unit study! What a fun unit. It took me a while to get into this one; we did a lot of reading and we watched a great Magic School Bus video on plants but for a subject that has so much potential for hands-on study, I just wasn't getting into it! I think because I haven't ever been much of a green thumb. My grandmother was the greenest thumb I knew and I supposed I just didn't inherit it. I certainly have had the desire but I guess maybe I was afraid things would DIE! But I've managed to raise a few children and if I can help make them grow, certainly a few little plants shouldn't intimidate me. So I jumped in and we began to do some work! We were blessed to be loaned a really cool microscope that let us get up close and personal with some leaves and we made some pinecone bird feeders. Then we planted some live plants and even some seeds. We'll have to wait and see if they will live. But if they don't, we won't give up! We'll just plant some more. Grace and Emily loved planting and I think they will be fine little gardeners some day. Maybe Gram passed her green thumb on to them!

One thing that inspired me to get a move on was the morning Grace decided to go out early in the morning and "study plants". Emily joined her a little while later and I could hear them talking about having a "Science Plant Club"! Cool! They were actually learning and trying to apply it themselves. They brought some notebooks, rulers, pencils and a magnifying glass and started documenting their findings all on their own. I didn't even tell them to do it! So they have pages and pages of plants that they drew, measured and labeled! A defining moment for me, to say the least. Just when I have been discouraged, God gives me a glimpse of their progress and encourages me to press on.

We made peanut butter pinecone birdfeeders laden with birdseed and hung them out, then waited for the birdies to come. Didn't happen. But about a week later we went to check them out and saw where their little beaks had been pecking away at the treats! Smart little birdies! We actually caught one in the act this week but because of where the feeder was hanging, it couldn't really find a place to get to it. So we relocated it. We have a whole jasmine covered fence that serves as a condo for a ton of little sparrows, so I'm surprised the feeders aren't totally stripped!

Finally, a friend loaned me a great microscope so Grace and Emily went out and found a bunch of samples. It was so amazing for the girls! They loved it! It made the Magic School Bus video come alive! Also, we purchased a bunch of plants for the backyard and planted them. Then the girls picked out some seeds that we planted in peat pots. We are also waiting for an avocado seed to sprout and some apple seeds (which may never sprout!).

Ocean Murals

We ended our unit study with ocean life. Here the girls created their own mural. We found out that the ocean contains many zones and the farther down it goes, the darker it gets and the animals that live in each zone vary, including the way God created them to live in those zones. We found a really cool website that allowed the girls to play a game where they descended gradually in the ocean called Journey to the Deep. They started out by picking which creature they wanted to be: a fish, a seal or a whale. At each level they learned things about the creatures that lived there and answered a question after 60 seconds of exploring. Then they were able to descend to a lower part of the ocean. It was really neat. The girls actually got a little intimidated when it got to the lowest zone, sometimes reffered to as the Aphotic Zone (but I found that there are other names for it as well). It was really dark and some rather strange creatures lived there! We also watched some on-line video on different creatures that live in the sea and there were many that we have never known to exist! God is very creative!

Grace and Emily especially like watching video of sharks! They don't get to do it as often as they would probably like because I don't always feel creative :) but it's a great time for them when they get to. They put their all into it.

At the Pond

Jesus said to her, Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water I that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up unto everlasting life, John 4:13-14

For the past two weeks, we have been learning about water. Rain, God's blessing to man; famine, life without water; the water cycle; Why we need rain; Ponds, rivers and lakes; Ocean life; Jesus is the Living Water. We learned that rain can be a blessing but at times can be a curse. But God causes rain to fall on both good and evil man, providing for all no matter if they believe and love him or not. Areas have been stricken with famine from the times of Abraham, yet God still provides for His creation. We have the opportunity to help those in areas of famine. Grace thought of some ideas to raise money to send to those areas; selling lemonade (always popular with the younger set), a yard sale and a "skate-a-thon" at the ice rink (look for info of this coming your way soon!). We visited a pond and checked out the many critters that live in and nearby. This was a fun trip. We are going to visit the ocean once the weather clears up a little. This has been a fun unit and we wanted to share a few things that we did. Next unit is about plants!

A heron, called a Snowy Egret. We watched it look for food as it walked along the banks. We found out that it has bright yellow feet! It's very beautiful when it flies.

There were lots of mallard ducks, as well as a few other types and lots of geese, including beautiful Canadian geese. We watched as a mallard couple flew straight for the water and at the last minute, the female spotted a turtle in her path and slammed on the brakes, sending a spray of water into the face of the turtle! We laughed over this and imagined what he would tell his family when he got home! This picture was a funny one taken while the mallard boys dove for food.

This was the turtle, right before the ducks flew in. We were so excited to see turtles! There were several more laying on a log a little further down.

Dayna enjoyed our little jaunt, too! She kept up with us as we traipsed all over the place. There was a moment, though, when a dog covered in mud up to her chest came running straight for Dayna and I. As I picked her up, expecting the worst, the silly dog quickly changed course and headed for the pond to play some more. I seriously think the dog was laughing at us!

When we first got to the park, the geese surrounded us - greedy little birds. Actually they are quite large! They are at just about eye level with the girls. This had happened once before at another pond and it really frightened Grace and Emily, so they were on edge before we even got out of the car. I showed them that if you just stomp your feet and say, "Shoo, shoo, shoo!", they would slowly retreat. So here they are, showing the mean faces they would give the geese. Aren't they intimidating? (Disclaimer: No geese were injured during the making of this field trip) What a fun day!
